The gubernatorial election in Virginia clearly established that 30% of the eligible voters do not care about democracy anymore. They prefer a Republican oligarchy than the current two-party system and its various checks-and-balances on power.
Unfortunately, taking the plotters of the insurrection towards full justice is a big political gamble. That very act could set off a small-scale civil war--and accelerate that one-party rule. I feel sorry for those decision makers trying to sort this mess out.
I don't have an immediate solution. I believe the social/forces are too far to turn back and the near history of the USA has already been decided.
We may not know what the near history is yet, but we need to start thinking about a new democracy for when the dust settles on this old democracy.
