The "hired gun" is similar to my hypothesis.

Inside most of us is an "internal dictator," a force that wants to control things. While we can't be that dictator, we can be playing a game of "acquiring influence" to effect our desires of how the world should be shaped.

A few demographics in the USA have learned how to unite themselves such that 20% of the people can have most of the political control.
