The troubles with political labels is that there are often more than a few subdivisions for each label. Communism can mean different things, and all definitions will be correct.
The communism in Czechoslovakia was different than USSR. The former was fairly democratic in its internal party operations; is the latter, operations were manipulated from the top.
In China, the communism is still there in political structure, but the economy is far more capitalistic than Marx or Engels would have wanted.
Western democracy is amazing in that when the people have spoken against a governing party, that party stepped aside gracefully. This departure goes against our instinct for power gathering. Except, we seem to be losing that touch.
