The two-party hegemony has been around for a long time. With so many "safe" districts, the real elections are actually the party primaries, where maybe 5% of population ever votes. Those who aspire for power and their backers have preference for this "feudalistic" system as the outcomes can be more easily manipulated.

Rather than blame the two parties, maybe it's time to investigate a new way.
