The writers of the Constitution envisioned a non-partisan parliament (or Congress) and elected representatives would vote on some combination of their conscience and constituent desires.
Despite that social engineering, the political parties entered early in this American democracy. And many of the intentions of the FF had been lost since then. For example, the electors of the EC had a much more robust role than being mouthpieces for the political party once every four years in just one decision.
Is the USA heading down a slippery slope?
A temporary reprieve can be decided in November 2020. The D’s need only find 2m more votes from the 125m who normally don’t vote to take away the presidency and senate. If the D’s can’t do this, that is saying something about the state of American democracy.
If the D’s do find electoral success, the reprieve is only temporary. The D’s are not exactly angels traveling on the high road. They played a role in the formation of Donald Trump. There will be further scandals and band-aid solutions.
