There have been a few commentators about the Russian tactic to win battles. Send the "sacrificial meat" to attack the Ukrainian lines. When those lines fire, the Russians will know where the lines are. Then comes the artillery. So the Ukrainians cannot win, so the thinking goes.

But I suspect the Ukrainians know this and have developed some counter-strategy.

As you say, sacrificing some space for time might be a great ploy.
