There is a documentary called "Hypernormalization 2016" which talks a lot of how media and social media can manipulate untruths. The documentary also talks how Putin plays the game so well.

The Russian interference probably gave Mr. Trump the edge in 2016, but, by-and-large, he got most of his 62m votes on his own merit. He was a viable contender, with or without Russian help.

Rather than blame the Russians, we need an electoral system where Russians or big corporations really can't find that edge in tight races.
