These kinds of statements could be a statement of character or they could be a way to solicit votes from these kinds of characters--or even a combination of the two. It's hard to determine exactly the motive here.

The facts were out there for Americans to make up their own minds. The media need not directly call a quack belonging to a duck.

Had they done so, I doubt voting intentions would have changed that much.
