This article is far too American-centric. The M4 was one the poorer tank designs of WW2. In a one-on-one battle with the earlier Panzer 4, the Sherman was still not a match.
Its advantages were its numbers. Five Shermans could be set against one Tiger, and that would have been a fair fight.
And the Sherman won many battles because the German tanks were out of fuel.
The best overall tank of WW2 was the Soviet T-34. Fast, reliable, great tracks, reasonable armour. Still not a one-to-one match for a German tank, but when the numbers were there, the T-34 won some pretty big battles.
