This co-dependency angle is worthy of further consideration. The best way for a nation to forget about its own problems is to boogey-man another nation.

Both Russia and the west have been boogey-manning each other for decades.

Unfortunately, when the dust settles in Ukraine, they will get another version of western democracy. This time corruption may be significantly reduced, but it won't go far enough.
