This is the second Orwell vs. Huxley Medium article I've come across. The first one convinced me to read BNW for the first. I think I resisted all these years because of the platitudinal title. Anyways, I'm just about done. A very good book indeed. Huxley is a great writer!
It reminds my of foray into Czechoslovakia shortly after the fall of communism. I found my way into a lot of pubs, with lots of working class people. Alcohol was, to some degree, the "soma" applied by the communists to keep much of the population placated.
I found this particular essay quite interesting, which is more focused on the Huxley side of the Huxley vs. Orwell debate. People have become "engineered or conditioned" not to think too much.
And--man-oh-man--have I ever experienced that! For 24 years, I have promoting a new kind of democracy, one without political parties. There's really no one interest in this idea. From my perspective, Huxley's world is already here! People don't want to think--let alone work for--a better kind of democracy.
I joined Medium almost two years ago. I was hoping that with its higher quality writing and higher intellect, maybe my ideas might get some traction. But it seems I have been wasting my time.
I'm just tieing up loose ends on Medium. Then I need to put my spare time and energy elsewhere (with another life project).
But as far as I can see, Medium contributors are already inculated into their powerlessnees to build the "brave new world" we really want.
