This one is interesting to me. I would say that this decline is part of farms getting bigger. Agriculture is mechanized more each decade. Each section of farmland needs less labor to harvest it. Fewer farmers mean fewer people in the small towns.

This a trend that is going to continue--unless rural America somehow re-invents itself.
