This reminds me of New Year's Eve in Brno, Czech Republic 1992. My girlfriend told me to stay inside.
Right at midnight, many guns were fired into the air in this city of 500,000. For about five minutes. Then stopped.
For a communist country that supposedly had no personal firearms, there were a lot of firearms.
My hypothesis was this was the citizenry's message to the communists: Don't push us too hard. We have guns.
And with so weapons fired at once, the authorities really couldn't put anyone in jail.
I wonder if that tradition still exists.
