A few years back, I ran into a video of professional campaign manager, hawking his wares to the highest bidder, party affilitiation did not matter. He also had a school for aspiring candidates to manage their way through the internal party elections and then the general election.

His jingle went something like this: "If you don't take my course, people with different ideas will win the election."
