Still encountering that article, I recalled one mathematical relationship in Orwell’s 1984 was the split in Oceania’s various classes: 85% proles, 13% Outer Party, 2% Inner Party.

The proles did all the work and provided the soldiers. They lived a subsistence life. The Outer Party was the hands and feet of the Inner Party; they had a few privileges and lived in the threat of being replaced. The Inner Party held on to power; they lived quite luxuriously.

I sometimes wonder how correct Orwell got these percentages. All societies seem to drift towards this 85/13/2 ratio.
