In my quest to improve my Medium standings, I try to evaluate why some of my articles do better than others. Unfortunately, I have not learned anything useful. After five years on Medium, I still write articles that look really good to me, yet Medium readers spurn them. Why? I don’t know.

I have divided my articles, in terms of Medium shekels, into these three groups:

1. Below Average: Less than $0.80

2. Average: $0.80 to $1.60

3. Above Average: Greater than $1.60.

Each category has one-third of my articles. When I get a below average article, I analyze it.

Sometimes I know an article will go below average before I publish it. For example, my “should-have-done-better” articles used to go above average; they were my best Medium shekels per hour of writing. But the last three should-have-done-better went below average. I’m not sure why, but I no longer include these articles in my list of should-have-done-better.

Sometimes I can recognize why an article failed, after I publish. Usually, the title sucks. So such an article would not make it to this list. After five years of being on Medium, I still have not learned how to consistently…
