Three More Articles that Should Have Done Better
And a quick election reaction
In my quest to improve my Medium standings, I try to evaluate why some of my articles do better than others. Unfortunately, I have not learned anything useful. After five years on Medium, I still write articles that look really good to me, yet Medium readers spurn them. Why? I don’t know.
I have divided my articles, in terms of Medium shekels, into these three groups:
1. Below Average: Less than $0.80
2. Average: $0.80 to $1.60
3. Above Average: Greater than $1.60.
Each category has one-third of my articles. When I get a below average article, I analyze it.
Sometimes I know an article will go below average before I publish it. For example, my “should-have-done-better” articles used to go above average; they were my best Medium shekels per hour of writing. But the last three should-have-done-better went below average. I’m not sure why, but I no longer include these articles in my list of should-have-done-better.
Sometimes I can recognize why an article failed, after I publish. Usually, the title sucks. So such an article would not make it to this list. After five years of being on Medium, I still have not learned how to consistently…
