To a lesser extent, western democracy has a similar problem. Our politicians are spending more time on being and staying elected than actually solving problems.

We need to move to a system where our elected representatives are mostly working on the problems, which would include a fair amount of study. But when they have to be on the hustings, that study is not likely to happen.
