To be a devil's advocate here, I don't think the D's can push as hard on the rogue R's as many D supporters would like them to. If the D's push too hard, that only increases the martyrdom effect. The 30% Magas are a serious social/political force. Their leader need only say the right words, and the USA goes to a bad place real quick. But the USA may be going their anyways.

It's sort of like directly taking on the Mafia in Sicily.

There is a balance politicians must walk. Even in more sane times, this balance was a bit precarious. Being "right" is often not the best way to stay elected.
