Trouble is that if the "thinkers" go in the direction you think they should go, there's 74m Americans who would disagree with this direction. They would be more inclined to take matters into their own hand (and guns).
When I introduced my new democracy in 2000, I thought the current system will still stand for at least 20 years for Americans (or should I say "1% of Americans") to build the new system. I'm not sure there's another 20 years any more.
To me, anyone who thinks the current system can somehow be fixed is a non-thinker.
