This pretty much says this. I doubt it very much he had any plan to win hearts and minds of the voters. Unfortunately his rhetoric resonated with too much of the public.

He probably would have been happy making a splash in the R primary coming in 3rd or 4th place, getting all sorts of Media attention. He is probably just as surprised as many other people how far he into the political process.
