Two summers ago, native Canadians were blockading rail lines, stopping a lot a commerce in this way. The prime minister used a similar strategy in handling this blockade. He waited for the protesters to conclusively lose the battle of public opinion, provide an opportunity for some face-saving, then move in with court decisions and police. By then, some of the energy of the protesters had dissipated.
Yes, the economy took a hit. But no significance violence was necessary. We had to be patient for this result.
During BLM protests in the USA, there was a lot more violence.
Whether the protest comes from the left or right, there are good and bad ways to handle it.
It would be better that we had a system of governance where citizens' valid concerns could be addressed without peaceful protests.
