Umair gives us a lengthy lesson on externalities from Economics 101, but to what avail? It is well known that the price of many things has costs not borne by the final consumer. For example, if I substitute cheeseburgers for broccoli, I am only enjoying my broccoli because some migrant worker is busting his back for less than minimum wage. This worker might last 10 years at this job, and spend the rest of his life disabled, most likely in Mexico where my taxes won’t cover his living expenses. He will be a burden to his relatives. But man, did I ever eat a lot of healthy broccoli.

Externalities are everywhere. In my economics course, one of the roles of government is to mitigate these externalities.

If government has so failed to deal with externalities, then Umair’s solution of electing Ms. Warren over Mr. Trump is likely not to produce the results he is looking for.

Maybe, just maybe, we should start looking at a new way of governing. It’s time to abandon western democracy.
