Walter: From my perspective, it's going to be hard to top this well written essay. It speaks so much to our inability to address mental health issues, something that is more difficult with conservative side of our political divide.
While growing up on a farm gave me lots of workplace skills that city kids did not have, I could have been Jeff.
While farmers still seem to portray themselves as a selfless occupation, working long hours with little pay to feed the people, the reality is somewhere else.
But the truth is that the farmers are no longer working the long hours. They might do some minor repairs to their farm equipment, but the middle-to- tough breakdowns get passed to the mechanics. While safety is better engrained, farmers just can't give a 14-year old kid the steering wheel of the bigger equipment. And the farm kids have better vehicles than this wage earner can afford (i.e. the farmers are relatively wealthy). Yet the myth of the poor farmer is maintained.
I could have been Jeff.
