We do need to consider all sorts of options for our work/life balance. Here's one arrangement I've been mulling over for the past few years.
Given that automation has been destroying a lot of manual jobs over the past few decades, we are going to put a lot of people out of work. Yet those in the professional classes (teachers, engineers, doctors, etc. )are finding themselves working lots of overtime. So we need to provide better education to move people into the professions BUT not work those professionals to death. In this way, we can give most people a job that contributes to society.
