Well, Marley has something for us to think about again.
I think this kind of advertising is mostly about converting ads into sales. The psychologists hired by the marketers figure this is the best way, maybe to reach multiple demographics at once. As well, these ads may give liberals a nice fuzzy feeling, which leads them to buy the product advertised. The ads will likely not reach the "white supremist" demographic, but I suspect the advertiser did not want this demographic anyways.
The focus group study reflect the mulitiple demographic. At the end of each campaign, the ads are evaluated. If they did not sell more of Product X than before, they would stop using this technique.
And it may all be a marketing fad that will disappear.
I'm not convinced this is a deliberate attempt to instill societal values that are beyond Product X. But they could unintentionally be doing that. For short-term profit.
