What hit me most about this book is how powerful traditions are. Even the nearby village, which did not have the lottery, had similar corn harvests as this village. The villagers could not see the evidence in front of them.

We have another tradition that needs losing. It is called western democracy. The evidence is there that it is no longer working for us. Yet we cling to it as if it is the only good way to organize society.
