When I read the Handmaid’s Tale circa 1990, I came to the conclusion that this dystopia is plausible if certain Christians manage to “run things” their way. At that time, there was a group called “The Promise Keepers,” which appeared to me to be more a show of political force than a religious movement. That movement died out.

An opportunity to tell the truth about God’s character, using Scripture to debunk what Gilead does in the show to terrorize its citizens.

The article’s writer is indeed correct that the Bible would never guide society in a Gilead way. But there are Christians who would misinterpret the Bible to build a political force that builds a society like Gilead. The writer of Handmaid’s Tale is warning us of this possibility.
