When I was a kid, my parents got a new stereo, which they could not afford. So we had only three records for a long time. I think I have all the lyrics permanently etched in my mind. Tom Jones was one of those records.

Like many "fans," we did not think too much about the lyrics. I remember an act at the Edmonton Folk Festival (circa 1990) where an aspiring folk singer had 2,000 people singing along to Delilah. That's when I realized that this is a horrid song.

A lot of music is leading us sublimely in a wrong way. We may not pay much attention to the lyrics. Some of us are not affected; but others are.

In the end, there is no easy answer to what should be banned or not banned. It will be too hard to police and enforce. I think organizations should have the right to make that choice for its own venues. If the decision to ban is made democratically, maybe that is all we can ask for.

One song that needs to be investigated in the American national anthem. That song is a war song, based on erroneous history. Maybe in a couple of decades, it too will be challenged.
