When I went to engineering school circa 1980, I could say that my classmates came from all parts of the economic strata. I have to wonder which classes are attending engineering schools today? Tuition has gone up from $900 in my day to about $9000.

On another note, I watched a bit of the Olympics. I started wondering how many of those athletes come from middle class backgrounds. Probably not many. Most middle class families do not have the resources to herd their kids through high quality sports programs which are necessary to produce viable competitors.

Is it just a coincidence that these sports programs are funded largely by governments?
