When the US constitution was being crafted, the founding fathers relied a lot on the philosophy of John Locke and one other philosopher at the time, whose name I can't recall. These works explained human nature as understood in the 1700s.
For example, the founding fathers knew that power-hungry people would be attracted to politics, so they put up various mechanisms to corral the behavior of politicians.
We have gathered more knowledge about human nature. Pyschology, sociology, anthropology, etc. have taken great strides.
Yet today's political scientists don't seem to be using any of that new knowledge. They are stuck in 1776.
