While the outcome was pretty much pre-ordained, I think the impeachment process opened wide the door for many criminal and civil law suits. By keeping Mr. Trump in a pile of lawyer bills, his ability to mount another charge is curtailed. Not as dramatic as an impeachment hearing, but the result is the same. Even if only 50% of the legal proceedings are successful.
Now, with more of the facts laid bare (like, what was Mr. Trump really doing when the insurrection was mounting? For he isn't telling us), there is no longer any political downside to conducting this "witchhunt". And Biden/Harris can leave the bureaucracy to handle the "witchhunt" and focus on the immediate needs of the country. I see a great win here--because of the impeachment hearing.
Anyways, Manny, you mentioned the USA has a dysfunctional democracy. For sure, the USA should not have gone to the place is curretly in. And that is why I am responding.
Western democracy has a high degree of dysfunctionality to it. If we really want to better ourselves, we need to move to a better kind of democracy. You might be intersted:
