While there are all sorts of opinions on this matter, the reality is that there can be several outcomes. I would say a full-scale civil war is a small-probability outcome.
I would agree with the author that there will be violence. Both right-wing and left-wing militias will wage small battles with each other in many urban jungles. Many militia and political leaders will be targets of assassination. But generally this "war" will be reasonably contained by civil authorities. Neither side will be able to amass a full army. Civilians will avoid the battles.
In a few years, the combatants will be killed off or get tired of fighting. For sure, the economy will take a hit, but most of it will chug along.
The question we should be asking is: "Should the USA continue with the system of governance that brought it to this situation?"
Or should the USA be looking for a new kind of democracy?

There will be enough peace in this "civil war" to build this new democracy. The sooner the more astute Americans understand the significance of this new democracy, the sooner they can start building it.
