With my limited legal perspective, I understand the House is not formally impeaching at this point. It is holding an impeachment inquiry. Just because this inquiry is something that was not done in Mr. Clinton’s case does not necessarily make it unconstitutional. Mr. Crawford’s lengthy response seems to confirm my perspective.
What I do see is some brilliant political manipulation by Ms. Pelosi et al.
- Something has to be done to quell the growing unrest of the hard D support. To do nothing when so many citizens want something to be done is also “undemocratic.”
- The Ukrainian scandal is not the smoking gun in my opinion, regardless of how many CNN experts say it is. It is just one of many straws, but this straw is breaking the camel’s back. Ms. Pelosi sensed that.
- The inquiry is paralyzing the White House, which will limit further damage.
- The inquiry is slow-playing the actual impeachment giving more time for the president to demonstrate his unsuitability for office. In other words, he is not handling this situation very well — and enough of his base will eventually come to that conclusion to effect the November 2020 result.
What I am seeing is a well orchestrated political move that is designed to take Mr. Trump out of office in November 2020. Plus a few R Senators — if they don’t get on the right side of history pretty quick. I wouldn’t be surprised the USA never sees an impeachment vote.
While this political play still has a lot of drama to play out to prove my hypothesis, I have to wonder why we ever got to this position in the first place. For sure, this whole controversy is taking away discussion from what really needs to get done in USA.
The R party elected a presidential candidate that was very impeachable in character and past history. Even if one thinks Mr. Trump is the ultimate answer for USA, he was clearly a candidate who was going to be an “easy target” for D snipers, who just needed to wait for the right moment.
Let’s just say that we should have a system of governance that will not put “impeachable characters” into high office.
