Yep! Most internet forums are similar. Medium is saner than the others, but it is still a case of "I want to be read much more than I want to read". I too am guilty as charged.
There was a forum called Writerbeat, which is now defunct. We had developed a sense of community, which was fun in a different way. Community is something that is missing on Medium. But Writerbeat couldn't seem attract more than 100 contributors at a time. And it was no echo chamber: all sorts of views allowed. We even had some white supremists. As long as they were respectful, the moderator allowed them to post. I had some good discussions with these people, but no minds were changed.
