Yep. We all have a religion of some kind. It is where we park our values to guide our thinking. I believe you and I have discussed this before.
The danger is that once we have formulated our political values, we tend to seek others of the same opinions. They become our social and support networks. To say that "I was wrong" means to cut oneself from those networks. And that is scary.
So people will tend to rationalize bad values--even though, deep down inside, they are uncomfortable with their chosen values.
