Yes, "freedom" is a vague term, isn't it?
I was in Czechoslovakia shortly after the fall of communism. Before that time, one did not have the freedom to spout off against government, but life was really not that bad.
The Czechs and Slovaks had a lot of mobility in their own country. They could travel anywhere or take a job anywhere--without permission from the government. There were lots of recreation opportunities. Religion was kind of frowned on, but it was not stopped. People married who they wanted to marry, got divorced when that was called for, had affairs, and raised families. etc. etc. There was a shortage of consumer products, but astute citizens had "connections" to get what they needed.
"Freedom", unfortunately, is used too loosely to rile up the masses.
Last summer, when the fleet of pickup trucks were harassing the Biden campaign bus, freedom was being lost in the USA.
