I seem to recall a writer telling a story of how she got chased of politics because her quasi-intern job in Washington DC could not pay for her apartment. I surmised that her job went to a well connected young person who has the family structure to allow him/her to work for next to nothing--and get that important experience and connections for a higher paying job later.
