You are raising many good questions here. Canada has more sensible laws about campaigning, but the parties are starting to push boundaries. For example, the Conservatives are putting out negative ads before the election is called, which they, apparently can do legally.

In 2015, the Conservatives called an election and were expected to win. The Liberal strategists had anticipated the style of attack ads----and had an effective counter attack, ready to go within a few days. That ad campaign vaulted Justin Trudeau to the prime minister's job.

So my question to you would be: "Should history be written by the more effective marketers?"
