You might be onto something. If a poverty-stricken student with B high school marks enters university, he or she just might prosper in a university environment, if many of the effects of poverty are now in the background.
We really need a UBI, especially for students.
Some time ago, I watched a Youtube video of a convocation speech at a university in Australia. The speaker said something like:
"You are graduating for one of two reasons. First you had a family and community enviroment that allowed you to build life skills to get your degree. The second is that--if you didn't have that environment--you have the DNA to push through those obstacles. Rather than be proud of your accomplishments, you should be thankful."
